Katy is one of Houston’s largest and most popular suburbs, located west of the city and split down the middle by I-10. Katy has been steadily growing since the 70s, when Houston itself exploded in economic growth. Originally a rural railroad town, Katy is now one of the Houston area’s most popular suburbs for families. Large communities like Cinco Ranch, Fulshear and developments north of Morton Ranch have added to Katy’s rapidly growing population.

Katy is also known for its outstanding schools, including Katy High School which is the winner of eight 5A Texas football championships. The city is also known for being one of the fastest-growing areas in the country. In 2024, Fulshear (located just to the west of Katy) was the second-fastest growing area in the entire country. As such, a variety of new businesses and restaurants are opening all over the region.

One of Katy’s major roads, Fry Road, intersects with I-10 and was one of the first parts of the suburb to see rapid development and growth. Although this growth was originally concentrated around I-10, north Fry Rd is now bordered by many large residential developments, parks, restaurants and business centers all the way up to Highway 290. Prominent neighborhoods in the north Fry Rd area include Cypress, Bear Creek, Highland Creek, Eagle Ranch and Windstone.

Another major crossroad in Katy is Westgreen, which also intersects with I-10. The Westgreen area developed after Fry Rd. was already built up, but it’s now another popular destination for families. Westgreen is interesting in that both ends of the road lead into parks, including George Bush Park to the south. Most of Westgreen’s neighborhoods, including Nottingham, Memorial Parkway, Kelliwood and Kingsland are found in a denser and older part of Katy between I-10 and Highland Knolls Dr. South of these neighborhoods is Cinco Ranch, an area of affluent residential and commercial developments that push all the way up to the Westpark Tollway.
